AVA Rabies Vaccination Exercise

Posted on October 16, 2017

Did you know that Singapore was declared RABIES-FREE since 1953?

This impressive feat is due to the contributed effort by the Government, responsible animal importers and pet owners, you and me! *CLAPS*

My Family Vet had an exciting day last Tuesday and we are excited to share with you what we did!

Dr Vanessa, along with our head nurse Deanna, were invited to be part of the AVA team, administering rabies vaccinations for the dogs on our coastal fish farm along the Western Johor Straits.

Routine rabies vaccinations, initiated by AVA, are done in response to rabies outbreaks in Malaysia in August 2015.

Our boat captain for the day!

While we were moving on boats between farm to farm, the sweltering heat from the afternoon Sun did not dampen our spirits in the least. It was our first visit to the fish farms, meeting all the fish farmers and their friendly dogs. The dogs warmed up to our presence quickly, and were in fact vying for our attention, pats and belly rubs!

Their adorable smiles and the knowledge that we had a part in keeping them safe from rabies for the next three years were the highlights of our day. We are truly grateful to have had this opportunity to help farm dogs outside of our usual scope of clinical work.
